Doug Farmer, Elder

Doug FarmerC. Douglas “Doug” Farmer was born in Pulaski, VA, and “born again” and baptized at nine years of age. While a sophomore at UNC, playing football, and serving in summer sports camps, he had an overwhelming conviction that the Lord was transforming him and calling him to a special place in ministry. At the end of his college days in 1957, Doug married Anne Howard of Concord, NC. God blessed them with three children-Mark, Beth, and Jeff, and later, nine grandchildren.

Doug’s career includes time as a head football coach, athletic director, educator, youth pastor, three years in seminary, and two years at NC Baptist Hospital Pastoral Care. He was later called to be a lead pastor. He served three churches in North Carolina and one in Northern Virginia before coming to this area in 1981 when he and Anne founded Camp Shenandoah Springs & Retreat Center. He was bi-vocational for the first 20 years serving three churches in the area which now have full-time pastors. He has also served his community on the School Board. His special sense of direction at this time in life is to reach children and youth for Christ before they leave home and mentoring men and fathers to become more of what God would have them be.
