Are We Raising Cain or Abel ()
Mark Jenkins, May 22, 2011
Part of the Raising God-Centered Kids in a Sin-Racked World
series, preached at a Sunday Morning
Parents must teach and model for our children how to be a blessing in our culture and not a curse. It seems complex, but how can parents help shape and form the motivations of our children. I believe the answer is found in Matthew 22:37-40; Deut. 6:4.
I want to look at what is means to teach our kids to love God with ALL their hearts (maybe the rest…soul, mind and strength…but really focus on the HEART). When you contrast the character traits of children and teens today: disrespect, disobedience, vulgar, thirst and hunger for violence, hatred, selfish, etc., I ask the question—how can we help our kids learn how to love God with all their hearts (Matthew 22:37-40). To not ask these questions has far reaching implications and consequences.
About Mark Jenkins: I'm the husband of an incredible woman named Tara who said “yes” to me and ministry and that's a double blessing. We have three girls: Megan, Mikayla, and Morgan. I grew up with all boys and now God wants me to discover how the other half lives.
I am a sinner saved by God's amazing grace. I was educated by a godly set of parents, Culpeper
County Public Schools, Longwood College, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Most importantly, I've been schooled in the classroom of life by a loving heavenly Father who knew I didn't know anything despite the diplomas hanging on the wall, and yet chose me to be one of his children. Today I serve as a lead shepherd of one of Culpeper's amazing local church families!
