Part of the All Things Parental series, preached at a Early Service service

Today, we’re broaching the important topic of discipline. Discipline has been called “Correction driven by love”. As we study through the scriptures my goal is to help parents understand that there is a major battle going on for who is going to be in charge in our households, and this is a battle that Christian parents must win and win decisively. I was educated by a godly set of parents, Culpeper County Public Schools, Longwood College, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Most importantly, I've been schooled in the classroom of life by a loving heavenly Father who knew I didn't know anything despite the diplomas hanging on the wall, and yet chose me to be one of his children. Today I serve as a lead shepherd of one of Culpeper's amazing local church families! And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

nor be weary when reproved by him.
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives.” (ESV)

Proverbs 19:18

18 Discipline your son, for there is hope;
do not set your heart on putting him to death. (ESV)

Matthew 5:37

37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. (ESV)

Philippians 2:14-15

14 Do all things without grumbling or questioning, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, (ESV)

Proverbs 9:7-8

Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
reprove a wise man, and he will love you. (ESV)

1 Samuel 15:23

23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has also rejected you from being king.” (ESV)

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (ESV)
